On March 4th 2025, the High Court admitted ISER and the Center for Reproductive Rights as ‘friend-of-court’ in a primary case challenging the detention of mothers and new-borns in a private hospital over unpaid medical bills. This is more than a legal milestone, it is an opportunity to expose how deeply unjust this practice is.
The submission will draw on both domestic and international law commitments to patient rights, and speak to the urgent need for state regulation of private healthcare facilities. For too long, women have been locked in hospital wards, not because they are sick, but because they are poor.
